Memories: This was when we went in front of the LA County Board of Supervisors to stand up for our communities of Hacienda Heights and La Puente.
We, Gabriela Navar and Christine Salazar, founded the #HLPMovement about a year ago as a means to spread awareness to the various issues/problems happening at the HLPUSD.
The more we became informed, the more problems we found, with the biggest issue being transparency and actual communication with the communities of Hacienda Heights and La Puente over decisions and actions that will impact the entire school district.
We spoke up at Board Meetings, seeking advice from other community leaders and making sure they knew the truth. We are more powerful together.
From Brown Act Violations to Wasteful spending ($200K in PR Firms), from Self Interest groups and lame duck board members to toxic environment for staff (fears of retaliation), the district was failing not our communities, but its very own employees and staff.
In order to change what was happening at the District, we knew we had to clean house. So we became the lead proponents of the Recall for Martin Medrano, Anthony Duarte, Dr. Joseph Chang, and Gino Kwok. And while some will have you believe, this recall did not fail. We had to stop our efforts because of the pandemic. Safety became our first priority.
For over a year, we shared what we knew to our communities, giving you all an opportunity to voice your concerns and opinions, making sure the district would not silence us, their constituents. We voted for them and they should represent the best interest of the communities that put them in those seats. We must ALWAYS hold our local leaders accountable for their actions (and in some ways, inactions). They represent the people of HH, LP and Valinda.
I am here for the betterment of our district. They hold in their hands the education and future of our kids. And I will never stop standing up for you all.
